In the first review of the ultrasound results, the doctor will tell the excited couple a magical word of only two letters: a boy or a girl. This little word will change the whole picture, and you'll immediately paint it in blue or pink.
Some say that our gender affiliation to these colors stems from the education and culture we have received, and continue to give our children. However, a Chinese study published this month actually claims that the reason why female sex is attracted to pinks is biological.
According to the researchers, the female instinct is to obtain food for their children, and to collect fruit and berries in the forest, which are mostly pink and purple. Either way, this is a clear identification tag, especially when it comes to small babies who have not yet developed clear signs: if it is wrapped in pink, it is a girl. If he has a blue hat, it's a boy.
A world of unified identity
Junggy Yun, a successful New Yorker of South Korean origin, believes that this is a social phenomenon that stems mainly from advertising. Jon became more and more intrigued by the subject as his little daughter grew up collecting more and more objects of the same color, and decided to dedicate a whole photographic project to the subject, in which he entered children's rooms and displayed their owners alongside thousands of items made for them by gender.
"The project explores the trend, and shows mainly how children from different ethnic groups with different backgrounds are in the same sterile world and one identity, all because of aggressive consumption, globalization and capitalism, which affect us all," he says.
Indeed, quite disturbingly, the pictures show that there are almost no differences between the children's world, some of which were taken in South Korea, and some in the United States.
